Washington
Township is the most westerly township in Morris County. The area
was originally occupied by the Lenape Indians and later, in the
1700's, settled by German Protestants. As a result of the influx
of those Europeans, the area became known as German Valley. The
area of Washington Township known as Schooley's Mountain was probably
America's earliest summer resort and spa. Mineral springs, declared
in 1815 to be the purest and best source of chalybeate water,
were the reason for the interest.
Today,
Washington Township is known for the historic stone structures
of the German Valley Historic District, the excellent Township
services, and it's proximity to transportation options to New
York City. Recreation is still important, and the area is graced
with a number of Township, County, and State Parks.
